This Sōsaku Kokeshi titled Hanagokoro (花心), meaning “The Heart of Flowers,” is a beautiful example of refined Japanese folk art. Created by the celebrated kokeshi artist Muhitsu Miyajima, the doll features a calm and contemplative expression, with softly painted eyes and a gracefully sculpted silhouette.
Delicate white cherry blossoms (sakura) fall gently down the figure’s body, symbolizing fleeting beauty, seasonal change, and feminine elegance. The design evokes the essence of Japanese aesthetics—quiet, graceful, and deeply emotive.
This particular kokeshi originates from Minakami Onsen (水上温泉), a renowned hot spring town in Gunma Prefecture. Known for its scenic natural beauty and long tradition of craftsmanship, Minakami Onsen has inspired generations of kokeshi artists.
Muhitsu Miyajima (宮島無筆, b. 1929) began making kokeshi in 1942 under the tutelage of traditional kokeshi master Kichitaro Kobayashi. By 1949, he transitioned fully into the creative kokeshi movement (Sōsaku Kokeshi), distinguishing himself with sculptural simplicity and emotional depth.
His works have influenced many artists in the modern kokeshi world, and in 1973, he was awarded the Prime Minister’s Award, one of Japan’s highest honors in the field. Known for producing dolls of exceptional craftsmanship, Miyajima-san remains a highly respected and collected figure in the history of kokeshi making.
