This charming ceramic tanuki is a delightful example of Shigaraki ware (信楽焼) — one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns, originating from Shiga Prefecture. Crafted in the traditional rustic style, this figure captures the beloved tanuki, or Japanese raccoon dog, a folkloric creature celebrated for its mischievous charm, shapeshifting abilities, and association with good fortune and prosperity.

The tanuki stands upright with a rotund belly and expressive face, sporting a wide straw hat and holding a sake flask, classic attributes of the figure that reflect both hospitality and lightheartedness. The rich glaze features earthy browns, warm amber, and creamy white hues, characteristic of Shigaraki ceramics, which are known for their rough clay texture and natural ash glazes.

Traditionally placed at the entrances of shops and restaurants, tanuki statues like this one are considered to attract customers, invite wealth, and ward off bad luck.

This piece is not only a cultural icon but also a whimsical and auspicious addition to any space,  embodying the spirit of Japanese folk belief, pottery tradition, and joyful superstition. A perfect collectible for admirers of Japanese ceramics and folklore alike.

Size: 8 x 7 x 14.5cm
