K15054 - Sosaku kokeshi from Miyajima 宮島
This exquisite Sōsaku Kokeshi (創作こけし) is a beautifully handcrafted representation of Miyajima (宮島), one of Japan’s most iconic historical and cultural sites, home to the famous Itsukushima Shrine (厳島神社) and its floating torii gate.
The doll features a sweet, smiling face with finely painted black bangs, delicate eyelashes, and red accents, exuding a cheerful and welcoming aura. Floral Headpiece & Decorative Bun: The red and yellow floral motif on her head, along with the signature red side bun ornament, adds a delightful and playful touch.
A vivid illustration of the Itsukushima Shrine Torii Gate surrounded by water, a symbol of the sacred site. A depiction of a traditional figure in an elaborate costume, it represents "Ebisu no Owatari" (えびすのお渡り) festival held at Itsukushima Shrine. This annual event takes place on Health and Sports Day in October, where Ebisu-sama (the deity of prosperity and good fortune) is paraded through the local Furusawa area with his attendants to pray for the prosperity of the community.
Miyajima is famous for Itsukushima Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its floating torii gate, as well as its association with Ebisu, the god of prosperity and good fortune. This kokeshi captures the spiritual and cultural richness of the region, making it a meaningful souvenir or collector’s item. Inscription on the Bottom: The handwritten message on the underside of the base, dated Showa 53 (1978), November 19, suggests that this kokeshi was a farewell gift given to an individual named Mr. Nakamura (中村様) from Nichidōsha (日通社光), possibly a company or organization.
