Mamoru Sato was born in Togatta Onsen, Miyagi Prefecture, a region known for its rich kokeshi-making tradition. He trained under Tatsuo Sato (佐藤達雄) and became known for producing traditional Togatta-style dolls with clean lines, vibrant red detailing, and soft yet distinctive facial features. Sato’s kokeshi are characterized by their balanced forms and a preference for understated decoration, often choosing to highlight the natural beauty of the wood grain alongside carefully painted motifs.
