This charming Sōsaku Kokeshi is inspired by Takasago (高砂), one of Japan's most beloved legends and a celebrated Noh play that has symbolized marital harmony, longevity, and enduring happiness for centuries. The figure portrays the old man of Takasago (尉 – Jō), instantly recognizable by his smiling expression, flowing white beard and moustache, and simple traditional robes.
According to the legend, an elderly couple—the old man from Takasago in Harima Province and the old woman from Sumiyoshi in Settsu Province—are revealed to be the spirits of two ancient pine trees growing far apart yet forever united in heart. Their story became a timeless symbol of faithful companionship, prosperity, and a long life together, making the Takasago couple a popular motif in Japanese weddings, New Year celebrations, and traditional arts.
This kokeshi captures the gentle wisdom and warmth associated with the legendary elder. The artisan has given the figure a joyful upward gaze, expressive facial features, and subtle painted details on the kimono, creating a simple yet deeply expressive work.
