This charming vintage omiyage (souvenir) folk craft comes from Yahiko Mountain (弥彦山), one of Niigata Prefecture's most beloved sacred mountains and a long-standing destination for pilgrims, hikers, and visitors to the historic Yahiko Shrine (彌彦神社).

The figure portrays a young child dressed in a traditional straw rain cape (mino 蓑) and head covering, carrying a simple round wooden shield or basket. Made from a delightful combination of wood, fabric, straw, and natural birch bark, the doll captures the rustic lifestyle once common in Japan's rural mountain villages. Its gentle facial expression and carefully assembled natural materials give it the warm, nostalgic charm characteristic of Showa-era Japanese souvenir crafts.

Standing at the foot of Yahiko Mountain, Yahiko Shrine is one of the oldest and most revered Shinto shrines in the Echigo region, with a history spanning over 2,400 years. Dedicated to Ame-no-Kagoyama-no-Mikoto, the shrine has long been associated with prosperity, agriculture, craftsmanship, and safe journeys. Travelers visiting the shrine and the surrounding hot spring town often brought home handcrafted folk souvenirs like this as keepsakes of their pilgrimage and travels.
