K10249 - Omiyage kokeshi from Tōhoku

This charming vintage omiyage kokeshi comes from the Tōhoku region of northern Japan, the historic heartland of kokeshi craftsmanship. Created as a regional travel souvenir rather than as part of a strict traditional school, it presents a warm and imaginative interpretation of rural Japanese life.

The figure wears a broad wooden kasa hat, evoking the straw hats traditionally used by farmers and travellers for protection from the sun and rain. Its softly rounded head is painted with a calm, smiling expression, while a red cord-like detail frames the face beneath the hat. The body is decorated as a dark indigo kimono, enriched with bold white geometric motifs and a vivid red obi accented with delicate floral brushwork.

The hat give the doll a particularly playful silhouette, while the visible wood grain and hand-painted irregularities preserve the character of its handmade construction. The combination of simple turned forms, strong colours and folk-inspired costume reflects the creativity of postwar Japanese souvenir culture.

A distinctive decorative piece, this Tōhoku omiyage kokeshi carries both rustic charm and nostalgic appeal.
