K10216 - Sosaku of Three Friends of Winter 歳寒三友
This elegant set of three Sōsaku Kokeshi draws inspiration from the classical East Asian motif of the “Three Friends of Winter” (歳寒三友)—pine, bamboo, and plum—symbols of endurance, resilience, and renewal in the face of adversity.
Each figure is delicately carved with a slender, elongated form and gently bowed head, their closed eyes and serene expressions conveying quiet introspection. The natural wood grain is thoughtfully preserved, lending warmth and organic character to the composition while enhancing the understated beauty of the set.
The central figure represents bamboo (竹), adorned with rhythmic, brush-painted stalks and leaves that evoke flexibility and strength. To one side, the plum (梅) figure is decorated with soft blossoms emerging along dark branches, symbolizing hope and the promise of renewal as it blooms in late winter. The third figure embodies pine (松), its evergreen presence suggested through subtle, flowing motifs that speak to longevity and steadfastness.
Together, the trio forms a harmonious composition—each distinct yet unified—reflecting a poetic balance between nature and human spirit. Their minimal ornamentation and refined brushwork exemplify the essence of sōsaku kokeshi, where simplicity, symbolism, and emotional depth come together.
