This omiyage kokeshi portrays Shimizu Jirocho (清水次郎長), the legendary figure Shimizu Jirocho (清水次郎長, 1820–1893), one of Japan’s most famous historical yakuza bosses.
Carved in a compact, rounded kokeshi form, the figure features a broad, flat hat and a confident yet approachable expression. The face is rendered with simple, expressive lines—half-closed eyes and a slight smile—capturing a sense of calm authority. A small pipe at the mouth adds character, referencing the iconic image of Jirocho often depicted in storytelling and folklore.
The body is decorated with a stylized kimono in earthy tones, accented by geometric patterns and subtle color highlights. On the reverse, a bold kanji inscription evokes his name and identity, reinforcing the figure’s narrative significance. The overall design blends traditional kokeshi simplicity with the personality of a well-known historical character.
Shimizu Jirocho is remembered not only as a yakuza boss but also as a folk hero who protected his community and later contributed to public works and local development. As such, he symbolizes loyalty, generosity, and a strong sense of justice.
