This set of Izumeko いづめこ omiyage kokeshi captures a tender folk tradition from Japan’s Tōhoku region. Each doll features a smiling wooden head rising gently from within a small handwoven basket, evoking the historical custom in rural northern Japan of raising babies in straw baskets during the busy farming season and harsh winter months. These protective baskets kept infants warm, safe, and close at hand while families worked.

The two figures are charmingly simple in design. Their smooth, round heads are painted with bright eyes and soft red smiles, radiating warmth and innocence. Their slender necks emerge from tightly woven miniature baskets made in the style of traditional straw cradles. The natural wood tones and earthy basket textures reflect the rustic life of the countryside, while the subtle red accent on one figure adds a gentle touch of color.

The Izumeko Doll has long existed in folk art, inspired by this child-rearing custom. Over time, it has been crafted not only as wooden kokeshi but also as clay dolls. Examples can be found in areas such as Yatsuhashi, Nakayama, and Shimokawahara in Tōhoku. Depending on the locality, the dolls are known by different names, including “Ejiko” or “Izume,” yet all share the same symbolic meaning—protection, nurturing care, and the enduring bond between parent and child.
