This vintage Donko (どんこ) Kokeshi set features a delightful pair of round-bodied wooden dolls, each with its own gentle personality yet clearly meant to be enjoyed together. Donko kokeshi are not tied to one strict traditional regional school. They became popular in the Shōwa period (1926–1989), especially as souvenir and decorative kokeshi, made for everyday enjoyment rather than strict tradition. Many were produced in onsen towns and craft workshops.
