K10188 - Vintage Donko Kokeshi set どんこ

This vintage Donko (どんこ) Kokeshi set features a delightful pair of round-bodied wooden dolls, each with its own gentle personality yet clearly meant to be enjoyed together. Characterized by their compact, plump forms and large, softly rounded heads, Donko kokeshi are beloved for their warmth and approachability, evoking the feeling of everyday life and family harmony.

Donko kokeshi are not tied to one strict traditional regional school. They became popular in the Shōwa period (1926–1989), especially as souvenir and decorative kokeshi, made for everyday enjoyment rather than strict tradition. Many were produced in onsen towns and craft workshops.

The pair is dressed in vividly painted kimono with contrasting colors and patterns. One figure wears rich red tones accented with floral and geometric motifs, while the other is decorated in calmer greens and earthy hues, adorned with stylized plants and blossoms. Their clothing designs reflect traditional Japanese aesthetics, rendered in a naïve, folk-art style that emphasizes charm over strict symmetry.

Their facial expressions are especially endearing—simple crescent-shaped eyes, lightly blushed cheeks, and small pursed lips give them a quiet, contented presence. Subtle differences in hairstyle and head shape add individuality, suggesting a couple or companions rather than identical figures.
