K10173 - Hakone Yosegi Zaiku Kokeshi Toothpick Holder 箱根寄木細工

K10173 - Hakone Yosegi Zaiku Kokeshi Toothpick Holder 箱根寄木細工

This charming kokeshi-style toothpick holder is a delightful example of Hakone Yosegi Zaiku (箱根寄木細工), the traditional Japanese marquetry craft that originated in the Hakone region during the late Edo period (c. 1844). Known for its intricate geometric patterns made from naturally colored woods, Yosegi Zaiku is a nationally recognized traditional craft (dentō kōgei).

The cylindrical body of this piece is decorated with a rich mosaic of tiny wooden pieces in various shapes and tones, all handcrafted without any dyes. The girl’s head — with a sweetly painted face and a red hair ornament — serves as the lid, which lifts to reveal a set of finely crafted wooden toothpicks inside.

The label reads 手作りのようじ入れ (Handmade Toothpick Holder), and the accompanying leaflet lists the variety of woods used to achieve the vibrant pattern.

A wonderful combination of functional design and traditional artistry, this piece makes for a thoughtful souvenir or a charming addition to any Japanese craft collection.
