K10162 - Omiyage Kokeshi dolls in Lacquered Gourd 瓢箪
This omiyage (souvenir) set features a pair of miniature kokeshi dolls housed inside a hollowed and lacquered gourd, known in Japanese as hyōtan (瓢箪). Symbolic of good fortune and protection, the gourd has long been used as a talisman in Japanese culture.
The front of the gourd is delicately hand-painted with plum blossoms and decorated with braided cord and decorative tassels, lending a festive and auspicious aura. Inside, the two tiny kokeshi figures wear traditional kimono patterns and stand side by side, representing harmony and companionship.
The piece rests on a natural wooden base and is accompanied by a miniature sake cup (sakazuki), painted in a rich red with the character 寿 (kotobuki), meaning "longevity" or "congratulations"—a motif often used in celebratory occasions such as weddings and New Year's.
This handcrafted folk art item captures the essence of heartfelt well-wishes and traditional Japanese aesthetics, making it a unique and meaningful collectible.
