K10136 - Japan folk crafts Kabuki Shibaraku 女暫
This wooden doll represents 女暫, it is the female version of the iconic Kabuki role「暫」(Shibaraku), one of the most famous and dramatic characters in Kabuki theater. Originally performed by Ichikawa Danjūrō in the Edo period, Shibaraku is a heroic figure who bursts onto the stage with a powerful shout of “しばらく!” (“Shibaraku!” meaning “Just a moment!”) to stop injustice and save the day. The original role is male, but in later interpretations, a female version—Onna Shibaraku—was created, where a woman embodies the same bravery and dramatic flair.
With its theatrical posture, bold costume colors, and straw hat, matches many of these characteristics. The angular carving style and colorful paint evoke a dynamic stage presence, and her stance with accessories like the travel hat, sword , and tied obi detail, suggest she is a stylized representation of Onna Shibaraku, blending Kabuki heroism with folk craft charm.
