K10134 - Sōsaku Daruma Kokeshi by Gōno Seifū 郷野清風
This striking Daruma-style Sōsaku Kokeshi is the work of artist Gōno Seifū (郷野清風) and is handcrafted from keyaki (欅) — Japanese zelkova, a premium hardwood prized for its beautiful grain and durability. The wood’s rich, reddish tone is highlighted by the smooth polish and natural patterns that emerge through the finish.
The doll depicts Daruma, the legendary Buddhist monk and founder of Zen, with his classic intense stare, full beard, and furrowed brow — all rendered in bold brush strokes with expressive character. Daruma is traditionally associated with resilience, perseverance, and spiritual awakening, and his iconic rounded shape represents the saying: "Nanakorobi yaoki" (七転び八起き) — "Fall seven times, get up eight."
Unlike traditional kokeshi that follow regional lineages, this piece is an example of Sōsaku Kokeshi, or “creative kokeshi,” which allows artists full freedom of expression in form and theme. Gōno Seifū’s craftsmanship reflects both humor and spiritual depth, merging folk tradition with bold individuality.
