K10131 - Sōsaku Kokeshi Ebisu by Shinkichi Matsutani 松谷伸吉

This Kokeshi figure is a creative rendition of Ebisu (恵比寿), one of Japan’s beloved Seven Lucky Gods (Shichifukujin), known as the deity of prosperity, fishermen, and commerce. Painted with a joyful expression and holding his signature treasures—a fishing rod and a lucky sea bream—Ebisu radiates warmth and good fortune. His gentle smile, red cap, and hand-painted details bring this traditional figure to life in playful, rounded form.

This doll was created by Shinkichi Matsutani, a unique figure in the world of Kokeshi. Though trained in Naruko Onsen, one of the most revered centers of traditional Kokeshi, Matsutani-san later developed his own creative path. Born in 1956 in Shimane Prefecture, he was inspired by a newspaper article at the age of 19 and traveled to Naruko to pursue his dream. Although initially turned away by his first choice of master, he found mentorship under Jinji Okazaki, eventually going independent in the 1980s.

His journey took many turns—from running a toy store near Izumo Taisha Shrine, to a long hiatus from Kokeshi-making. However, encouraged by fellow artisans and collectors, he returned to doll-making in the 1990s, blending traditional Naruko techniques with modern and folk-inspired expressions like this delightful Ebisu.

Today, Matsutani-san continues to create wooden dolls and toys in his Shimane-based shop “Yoshiya”, where visitors can see him at work using a potter’s wheel. His pieces reflect not only skill but deep personal storytelling—especially this Ebisu doll, which makes for a unique and auspicious gift or collectible.
