K10126 - Hijiori by Juunosuke Sato 佐藤重之助
Hime Daruma by Juunosuke Sato is a rare and charming example of Hijiori-style craftsmanship. With its rounded, hollow body and elegantly painted face, this 9cm kokeshi exudes both warmth and mystery.
Voluminous shape is typical of the daruma style, but it is feminized here into a "Hime Daruma" (princess daruma), expressing beauty and quiet strength. Her large eyes, gently curved brows, and confident lips are framed by bold black hair, while the leafy patterns wrapping around the base evoke natural harmony and traditional elegance.
Juunosuke Sato (佐藤重之助) was born in 1930 in Hijiori, Yamagata Prefecture, into a lineage of skilled woodworkers. From the 1960s onward, he dedicated more time to crafting kokeshi dolls and was particularly recognized for his early works, which were praised for their honest, rustic charm. He blended techniques from the traditional potter’s wheel and the daraiban, thanks to training from his uncle, Sato Minosuke.
Though he began as a part-time carver, Juunosuke’s work, especially rare forms like this Hime Daruma has become highly regarded among collectors for preserving the spirit and originality of the Hijiori tradition. He passed away in 1997 following a tragic accident, but his legacy lives on through his unique and expressive dolls.
