K05055 - Mikan Omiyage Kokeshi from Nachisan 那智山

K05055 - Mikan Omiyage Kokeshi from Nachisan 那智山

This is a delightful and rare omiyage kokeshi doll from Nachisan (那智山), a sacred site nestled in the mountains of Wakayama Prefecture, Japan. Uniquely handcrafted, this small kokeshi features a charming head painted in the shape of a mikan (Japanese mandarin oranges), perched atop a natural walnut shell body, a creative and whimsical fusion of nature and folk artistry.

The shell is delicately inscribed with Japanese calligraphy, adding a poetic and spiritual touch, reflecting the deep cultural and religious atmosphere of Nachisan. This area is home to Kumano Nachi Taisha, one of the three grand shrines of the Kumano Sanzan, and is known for Nachi Falls, Japan’s tallest uninterrupted waterfall, which has long been venerated as a sacred natural power spot.

More than just a souvenir, this kokeshi embodies the quiet beauty and spiritual essence of its origin. A wonderful piece for collectors of regional folk crafts, it carries the gentle energy of the Kumano mountains and the sacred pilgrimage tradition of the Kii Peninsula.

Size: 3 x 3 x 5cm
