K05019 - Onsen omiyage souvenir kokeshi “Yukiguni” 雪国
Vintage Omiyage Kokeshi (雪国) representation of “Yukiguni” (雪国), or “Snow Country”, a term often used to describe Japan’s heavily snow-covered regions, such as Niigata, Akita, and Aomori Prefectures.
These handcrafted wooden dolls, coated in a textured white “snow” layer, beautifully capture the essence of Japan’s harsh yet picturesque winter landscapes. These dolls retain the traditional round-headed kokeshi form, with simple hand-painted facial features reflecting classic Japanese folk art aesthetics. The lower half of the dolls is coated in a textured white finish, mimicking the appearance of deep winter snowfall, an iconic feature of Japan’s northern countryside.
This inscription is a nod to Japan’s winter landscapes and references the famous 1956 novel Snow Country by Yasunari Kawabata, which poetically depicts life in rural Japan’s deep snow regions. The dolls are mounted on a natural wood slice, enhancing their handcrafted, organic feel. These kokeshi likely originate from one of Japan’s famous snow-heavy regions, such as Niigata, Aomori, or Akita Prefecture, where traditional onsen (hot springs), winter festivals, and snow-covered villages are major cultural attractions. The imagery of these dolls evokes a sense of nostalgia and warmth, symbolizing the resilience and beauty of life in Japan’s snowy countryside.
