FT65 - Vintage Japanese folktoy Daruma

FT65 - Vintage Japanese folktoy Daruma

This is a handcrafted wooden Daruma puzzle, a charming representation of the traditional Daruma doll, a symbol of perseverance, good luck, and goal-setting in Japanese culture.

Carved from natural wood, this Japanese folk toy features an intricate interlocking puzzle design, where each piece fits seamlessly together to form the recognizable Daruma figure. The lower half of the design showcases stylized elements reminiscent of the doll’s rounded form and symbolic resilience.

The Daruma doll traces its origins to Bodhidharma, who, according to legend, meditated for nine years at Shaolin Temple, causing his limbs to atrophy. During the Edo period, Japan suffered the Tenmei Great Famine, severely affecting Takasaki. The Daruma’s resilience—its ability to right itself after being knocked over—symbolizes the famous saying “fall down seven times, get up eight” (七転び八起き, Nanakorobi Yaoki), making it a symbol of perseverance and recovery.

This Daruma puzzle box is not only a decorative item but also a functional piece. Its warm wooden texture and fine craftsmanship make it an excellent collector's item or a unique gift for those who appreciate traditional Japanese artistry and folklore.
