This delightful vintage wooden folk craft depicts the famous Matanozoki (股のぞき) pose, a playful tradition closely associated with Amanohashidate (天橋立)—one of Japan's celebrated Three Scenic Views (Nihon Sankei).

Matanozoki appears throughout Japanese folklore, where looking between one's legs was believed to reveal hidden truths—allowing fishermen to distinguish ghost ships from real ones, exposing mischievous spirits or yōkai, and even serving as a form of divination for future events. These enduring beliefs have made matanozoki one of Japan's most unique and fascinating sightseeing customs.

Visitors to Amanohashidate often bend over and view the sandbar upside down through their legs, a custom known as matanozoki, which transforms the pine-covered land bridge into what is poetically described as a "bridge floating in the sky" (天に架かる橋). This whimsical tradition has become one of the area's most recognizable symbols and has inspired charming souvenir crafts such as this miniature carving.
