FT500 - Vintage Craft of Habago 羽子板
This vintage Habago (羽子板) is a traditional Japanese decorative hagoita paddle, featuring an elegant young woman dressed in an ornate kimono. Richly adorned with brocade fabrics, delicate floral ornaments, and a finely painted face, the figure captures the timeless grace of classical Japanese beauty.
Originally, hagoita (羽子板) were wooden paddles used to play hanetsuki, a traditional New Year game similar to badminton. During the Edo period, decorative hagoita evolved into elaborate works of art and became cherished New Year ornaments believed to ward off evil spirits and bring good fortune. Because the shuttlecock is struck away during the game, it came to symbolize driving away illness and misfortune.
The doll is crafted using traditional Japanese doll-making techniques, combining a hand-painted face with luxurious woven textiles, braided cords, tassels, and intricate floral hair ornaments.
Presented in its original vintage presentation box, this piece reflects the craftsmanship and nostalgic charm of the Showa period, making it an attractive addition to collections of Japanese dolls, seasonal decorations, or traditional folk crafts.
