This striking Kazari-goma (飾り駒) is a decorative representation of the Ōshō (王将) piece from Japanese shogi, hand-carved and signed Tengetsu-saku (天月作). Originating from Tendō City (天童市) in Yamagata Prefecture, this piece carries an especially meaningful connection to the world of shogi, as Tendō is widely celebrated as Japan's "City of Shogi Pieces."

Nestled in the mountains of northeastern Japan, Tendō has been the country's leading centre of shogi piece production since the Edo period. Today, it is estimated that the city produces the vast majority of Japan's handcrafted shogi pieces. The craft flourished as samurai and local artisans sought alternative sources of income, eventually evolving into one of Yamagata's most recognised traditional industries. Tendō remains synonymous with the art of shogi-making and even hosts the famous Ningen Shōgi (Human Shogi) festival each spring, where people dressed as shogi pieces reenact matches outdoors.

The bold character 「王将」, meaning "King General," is the most important piece in shogi and represents the heart of the game. In Japanese culture, the character 王 (ō, king) evokes leadership, wisdom, dignity, and the ability to make sound judgments. Decorative shogi pieces such as this are often displayed in studies, entranceways, or tea rooms as auspicious ornaments believed to encourage strategic thinking, perseverance, and success in one's pursuits.
