This vintage zodiac rat figurine (干支・子) comes from Nanzen-ji (南禅寺), one of Kyoto’s most important Zen Buddhist temples. Founded in the 13th century and regarded as the head temple of the Nanzen-ji branch of Rinzai Zen Buddhism, Nanzen-ji has long been associated with mindfulness, simplicity, and spiritual refinement. Temple-issued zodiac figurines such as this were often acquired as New Year talismans, carrying wishes for good fortune and peaceful living throughout the year.

Rendered in a delightfully minimalist form, the rat is shaped with smooth, flowing curves that emphasize quiet elegance over elaborate decoration. The warm speckled ceramic body is marked with the character 「福」 (fuku, “good fortune” or “blessing”), a traditional symbol of happiness, prosperity, and auspicious beginnings. Its compact silhouette and understated design reflect the Zen aesthetic of finding beauty in simplicity.

In the Japanese zodiac, the rat (子 / ne) is the first of the twelve zodiac animals and symbolizes intelligence, adaptability, resourcefulness, and new beginnings. As the animal that leads the zodiac cycle, it is often associated with fresh opportunities, prosperity, and the successful start of new ventures.

Presented in its original box labeled 「福運之子」 (“Rat of Good Fortune”), this piece embodies both the spiritual atmosphere of Nanzen-ji and the enduring Japanese tradition of zodiac talismans. Whether displayed as a seasonal ornament, a collector’s piece, or a symbol of auspicious fortune, it serves as a gentle reminder of wisdom, renewal, and the blessings of a new year.
