This box of Kokeshi includes 3 works.
1. Kanagawa - Odawara lantern (神奈川-小田原提灯)
3 kokeshi dolls shaped like lanterns.
In Odawara (now Odawara City, Kanagawa Prefecture ), a post town on the Tokaido road , a local craftsman named Jinzaemon is said to have made the first lanterns so that the body could be folded up and stored inside the lid, making them easy for travelers to carry.
2. Kagawa - Girls' pilgrimage (香川-娘巡礼)
In 1918, 24-year-old Takamune Itsue (1894-1964) set off on a journey to Shikoku. She left her home, her job, and her love behind, simply seeking rebirth. In an era when women traveling was viewed with curiosity, her notes sent from her travels were serialized in newspapers and became a huge hit. This masterpiece of travel literature vividly conveys the suffering and realizations she experiences during her pilgrimage to the 88 temples, the lives of pilgrims living at the very bottom of society, and the scenery of each region.
3. Fukushima Byakkotai. (福島-白虎隊)
The Byakkotai (白虎隊, "White Tiger Unit") was a group of around 305 young teenage samurai of the Aizu Domain, who fought in the Boshin War (1868–1869) on the side of the Tokugawa shogunate.
