FT421 - Kyoto-style Daruma だるま
This Kyoto-style Daruma (だるま) is a small hanging folk ornament that reflects the refined simplicity and symbolic richness of Kyoto’s traditional crafts. Unlike the more commonly seen round Daruma figures, this piece features a softly tapered, gourd-like form, giving it a gentle and approachable presence.
Handcrafted and painted in vivid vermilion red—an auspicious color believed to ward off evil and invite good fortune—the Daruma displays a serene, minimalist face with delicate brushwork. The expression is calm and introspective, embodying perseverance and quiet determination, qualities long associated with Daruma as a symbol of resilience and goal-setting in Japanese culture.
At the base, stylized blue and white motifs add a subtle decorative accent, while the back is inscribed with 「交通安全」 (kōtsū anzen), meaning “traffic safety.” This indicates its role as a protective charm, often carried or hung to ensure safe travels and protection on the road.
Suspended by a cord, this Daruma is designed as a talisman rather than a static ornament—lightweight and portable, it can be hung in a car, doorway, or personal space. Its slightly irregular surface and hand-painted details speak to its folk origins, where individuality and warmth are valued over uniformity.
