This boar (inoshishi) zodiac figurine by Shōhō-gama (昭峰窯) captures the warmth and auspicious spirit of traditional Japanese New Year ornaments. Crafted in smooth ceramic, the figure is formed with a gently rounded body and compact stance, giving it a soft, approachable presence. Its matte white surface is accented with hand-painted details—small black eyes, pale pink ears, and distinctive golden tusks—while a cluster of vivid red and yellow dots decorates its flank, evoking blossoms or celebratory motifs associated with good fortune.

Produced by Shōhō-gama, a pottery line developed by Seto Togei Co., Ltd. in Seto City, Aichi Prefecture, the piece reflects the long heritage of Seto ware, one of Japan’s historic ceramic centers. The kiln is especially known for its refined yet playful zodiac figures, balancing folk charm with careful craftsmanship and seasonal symbolism.

In the Japanese zodiac, the boar represents courage, determination, and straightforward strength—qualities admired for overcoming obstacles and moving boldly into the future. The gentle expression and rounded form of this figure soften that strength into something protective and reassuring, making it an ideal engimono (auspicious ornament) for welcoming the New Year. Both decorative and symbolic, it embodies a wish for resilience, prosperity, and good fortune in the year ahead.
