FT408 - Hariko Akabeko – Red Cow Paper Mache 赤べこ

A vintage Akabeko (赤べこ) folk craft figure from Japan, traditionally originating from the Aizu region of Fukushima Prefecture.

Handmade in papier-mâché and painted in a vivid red, this particular Akabeko features ornate fabric saddles and decorative cords in colorful threads. Atop its back are miniature money box, tied with rope, imbuing the piece with auspicious meaning. A small bell adds a touch of liveliness and sound to the figure.

The Akabeko, a red cow with a bobbing head, is a beloved symbol of protection, endurance, and health in Japanese folklore. It is especially connected to the story of a cow that helped build a temple and became a spiritual symbol against illness — especially smallpox. The bright red color was believed to ward off evil spirits and disease.

This Akabeko's vintage style and ornamental details make it not only a meaningful talisman but also a delightful collectible of traditional Japanese culture. A perfect piece for folk art lovers or as a thoughtful, auspicious gift.
