FT406 - Wood Carving Zodiac dog of Ise Jingū
This finely carved dog (inu) zodiac figure is an example of Ittobori (一刀彫) craftsmanship from Ise Jingū 伊勢神宮, where simplicity of form and spiritual intention are brought together through the direct mark of the blade. Carved from a single block of wood, the figure retains the crisp, faceted cuts of the chisel, each plane catching light and revealing the natural grain of the timber. The result is a work that feels both rustic and refined, embodying the quiet dignity associated with traditional shrine arts.
The dog stands alert with a proud, upright posture, its curled tail and forward gaze conveying loyalty, protection, and steadfastness—qualities long associated with the dog in the Japanese zodiac. Rather than polished smooth, the surface is intentionally left with visible tool marks, a hallmark of Ittobori technique that emphasizes honesty of material and the presence of the maker’s hand.
Accompanied by its original wooden box and inscription, this piece is tied to the sacred traditions of Ise Jingū, the most revered Shinto shrine dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu. Objects from Ise often carry connotations of renewal and purity, reflecting the shrine’s cyclical rebuilding ritual. As an eto figure, this carving serves not only as a seasonal ornament but also as a talisman of protection and good fortune, quietly embodying both craftsmanship and spiritual heritage.
