This kōgō (香盒) is a work of Hagi ware (萩焼) by Okada Yū (岡田裕), the 8th generation (八代) of the distinguished Okada pottery lineage.

The piece is formed in the charming shape of a reclining dog, rendered with soft, rounded contours and expressive simplicity. The surface displays the characteristic qualities of Hagi ware—subtle glaze variations, fine crackle, and a gentle blend of pale white and warm pinkish tones created by the kiln firing. These natural transitions of color and texture embody the quiet, understated beauty that Hagi ceramics are celebrated for in Japanese tea culture.

Hagi ware has long been favored in the tea ceremony for its soft clay body and evolving surface, which gradually develops deeper character through use. This dog-shaped kōgō combines that tradition with a playful sculptural form, creating a piece that is both functional and warmly expressive.

The work comes with its original signed wooden box (tomobako), inscribed 「萩焼 香合」 and bearing the seal and signature of Okada Yū. Okada Yū is a respected contemporary Hagi potter whose works have been exhibited widely and are held in major museum collections in Japan.

Both elegant and approachable, this Hagi kōgō beautifully reflects the balance of tradition, craftsmanship, and gentle charm that defines the Hagi ceramic tradition.
