One large vintage Akabeko from Aizuwakamatsu, Fukushima. All handcrafted and hand painted. This might be the only Akabeko in this large size which for sell on the platform. Akabeko is a famous craft and symbol of Aizu region of Fukushima prefecture. The toy, made from papier-mâché, represents a red cow or ox and is designed with a unique feature: its head bobs or sways giving it a lively and playful appearance. Akabeko has its roots in a legend dating back to the 9th century during the construction of Enzō-ji Temple, a prominent Buddhist temple in Yanaizu, Fukushima. According to the story, when the temple was being built, a strong, red cow helped transport materials for the construction. After the temple was completed, the cow remained there and became a revered symbol of dedication, strength, and perseverance. Size: 32cm long, 12cm width and 15cm tall
