FT359 - Kaga Hachiman Okiagari Ningyo 加賀八幡起き上がり人形
This elegant 加賀八幡起き上がり人形 (Kaga Hachiman Okiagari Ningyō) is a traditional folk craft from Kanazawa, carefully produced by the historic workshop 中島めんや (Nakajima Menya). It is one of the most iconic auspicious dolls of the Kaga region, treasured as a symbol of protection, resilience, and healthy growth.
Rounded and gently weighted at the base, the doll rights itself whenever it is tipped over—expressing the Japanese spirit of perseverance captured in the phrase “nanakorobi yaoki” (fall seven times, rise eight). Its form is modeled after a swaddled infant dedicated to Hachiman Shrine, and it has long been given as a talisman for children’s well-being and family happiness.
The vivid vermilion body is richly adorned with hand-painted floral motifs, including plum blossoms and pine designs—both auspicious symbols of endurance and renewal. Fine gold speckling across the surface subtly recalls Kanazawa’s celebrated gold-leaf tradition. The serene white face, with softly arched eyes and small red lips, conveys calmness and gentle charm.
Inside the hollow papier-mâché body is a small bell that softly rings when the doll is shaken or rocked. This gentle chime enhances its protective symbolism, as bells in Japanese tradition are believed to ward off misfortune and attract good spirits.
