This Rat Shōfuku Eto (招福干支) from Nanzen-ji 南禪寺 is a charming zodiac talisman created to welcome good fortune and renewal in the Year of the Rat. Nanzen-ji, “Southern Zen Temple”) is a major Zen Buddhist temple complex in Kyoto, Japan. It is the head temple of the Nanzen-ji branch of the Rinzai sect and one of the most historically and artistically significant Zen institutions in the country.

Rendered in a vivid vermilion red, the small mouse is stylized in a rounded, simplified form that recalls traditional Japanese folk sculpture. The character 福 (fuku, “good fortune”) is delicately inscribed in gold on its side, reinforcing its auspicious meaning.

In the zodiac cycle, the rat (子, ne) is the first of the twelve animals, symbolizing new beginnings, resourcefulness, and prosperity. As described in the accompanying leaflet, the rat has long been regarded as a bringer of abundance, associated with household protection and flourishing family lines. Its compact, almost teardrop-shaped body gives it a warm, approachable presence, while the smooth matte finish enhances its handcrafted character.

This piece comes in a paulownia wood box with calligraphic labeling and temple seal, underscoring its connection to Nanzen-ji, one of Kyoto’s most important Zen temples. Founded in the 13th century and serving as the head temple of a major Rinzai Zen branch, Nanzen-ji is known for its dignified architecture and serene gardens. As such, this Shōfuku Eto is more than a decorative zodiac figure—it is a small devotional object carrying the spiritual atmosphere of a historic Zen sanctuary, meant to invite happiness, protection, and steady fortune into the home.
