This vintage Japanese folk craft represents Tajima-gyu (但馬牛), the celebrated strain of Japanese Black cattle native to Hyōgo Prefecture and the pure genetic source of the world-renowned Kobe beef. More than a simple animal figure, it embodies regional pride, agricultural heritage, and the deep cultural respect for cattle in rural Japan.

Hand-carved from cryptomeria wood (sugi) using the traditional Itto-bori (一刀彫) technique, the sculpture reveals confident, expressive knife marks that preserve the vitality of the wood. Rather than being overly refined, the form embraces simplicity—solid, compact, and powerful—reflecting the strength and dignity associated with Tajima cattle.

The surface is finished in yakisugi (焼杉), an age-old Japanese method of charring cedar to enhance durability and accentuate the natural grain. The deep, smoky tones and textured surface create a beautiful contrast with the lighter wooden base, while highlighting the organic patterns formed by fire and wood. This treatment gives the piece a rustic warmth and an authentic mingei (民芸) aesthetic.

Decorative elements add a ceremonial presence: a gold brocade saddle cloth trimmed with tassels, a braided purple cord, and red-and-white rope detailing reminiscent of festival adornments. These accents evoke the traditional honoring of cattle in agricultural communities, where oxen were once indispensable partners in farming life.
