FT350 - Folk Craft Horse Kiso Koma 木曽駒

FT350 - Folk Craft Horse Kiso Koma 木曽駒

This is a traditional Kiso Koma (木曽駒), a wooden folk craft horse from the Kiso region of Nagano Prefecture (信州・木曽).

Carved from solid wood and painted in bold, contrasting colors of black and vermilion red, the horse features a simplified yet powerful form. Its compact body, upright neck, and stylized mane reflect the distinctive character of the native Kiso horse breed—small, strong, and resilient. Decorative circular crests adorn the red saddle blanket, while a soft cord rein adds a playful touch of movement and craftsmanship.

It is produced by Kisokoma no Ya (木曽駒の屋), a workshop preserving this regional tradition. Kiso Koma have long been made as good-luck charms and children’s toys. The horse symbolizes endurance, safe journeys, diligence, and success—qualities deeply rooted in the mountainous culture of the Kiso Valley.

Historically, the Kiso route (木曽路) was part of the Nakasendō highway during the Edo period, where pack horses played an essential role in transportation and trade. Over time, these horses became beloved symbols of the region.

Compact yet dignified, this piece beautifully embodies the warmth and simplicity of Japanese mingei (folk art), carrying both regional pride and auspicious meaning.
