FT345 - Japan craft Kaga Shishigashira 加賀 獅子頭
This captivating wooden lion head figure, known as Shishigashira (獅子頭), is a traditional folk craft from Kaga, the historical name for present-day Kanazawa in Ishikawa Prefecture. Carefully handcrafted by the renowned Kanazawa workshop Nakashima Menya (中島めんや), this piece reflects centuries of regional artistry and cultural tradition.
Featuring a bold, angular lion head with vivid red accents, gold-painted teeth, and expressive eyes, the sculpture is animated by a movable jaw — a signature trait of Kaga Shishi dolls. The top is adorned with a golden horn-like ornament and natural fiber mane, adding a playful yet regal presence. The lion holds a symbolic wooden rod in its mouth and rests on a traditional indigo-patterned cloth, accompanied by its original signed box.
Nakashima Menya was established in 1830 in Kanazawa and has long been a distinguished name in the production of traditional toys and ceremonial crafts. They are particularly known for their Shishigashira carvings and Kaga Hachiman Okiagari, carrying forward local heritage with fine craftsmanship.
A wonderful addition for collectors of Japanese folk art, lion dance memorabilia, or those drawn to auspicious symbols of protection and celebration.
