FT318 - Kaga Hachiman Okiagari Ningyo 加賀八幡起き上がり人形
This is a traditional Kaga Hachiman Okiagari Ningyō (加賀八幡起き上がり人形) — a charming papier-mâché folk doll originating from Kanazawa City in Ishikawa Prefecture, historically part of the Kaga Domain.
Characterized by its rotund red body, serene white face, and vibrant hand-painted floral motifs, this doll is a type of “okiagari koboshi” (self-righting doll) — a symbol of resilience, perseverance, and good fortune. When pushed over, it returns upright, reflecting the Japanese proverb “Nanakorobi yaoki” (七転び八起き), meaning “fall seven times, stand up eight.”
The Kaga version is especially beloved for its origins as a protective charm for children, traditionally given to pray for healthy growth. The doll is closely associated with Hachiman Shrine, a guardian deity of warriors and families, from which it takes its name.
This particular piece is elegantly presented with its original wooden tomobako box, featuring handwritten calligraphy and red seal stamps, underscoring its authenticity and artisanal value. The delicate hand-painted patterns of pine and plum blossoms add auspicious symbolism of longevity and renewal.
A beautiful piece of Japanese folk tradition that embodies both cultural heritage and heartfelt wishes for well-being.
