This is a charming hand-painted wooden stand depicting Ōtsu-e Oni no Nenbutsu (大津絵 鬼の念仏), created by the artist 高橋和堂. Ōtsu-e is a traditional folk painting style that originated near Ōtsu in Shiga Prefecture during the Edo period, known for its bold lines, earthy pigments, and humorous yet moralistic themes.

The Takahashi family (高橋家) is one of the well-known lineages associated with Ōtsu-e (大津絵), the folk painting tradition that developed around Ōtsu in present-day Shiga Prefecture. Like many Ōtsu-e families, the Takahashi household functioned not simply as individual artists but as a hereditary workshop, where techniques, motifs, and visual language were passed down through generations.

The motif Oni no Nenbutsu portrays a red demon earnestly chanting the Buddhist nenbutsu, often beating a small gong. This image carries a gentle satirical message, it has long been regarded as a talisman for moral reflection, humility, and protection against evil.

Painted directly onto a warm-toned wooden board, the figure is rendered with expressive brushwork and lively colors—especially the vivid red of the oni contrasted against deep blacks and natural wood grain. The calligraphy and red seal add balance and authenticity, reflecting the playful yet contemplative spirit characteristic of Ōtsu-e. The piece comes with a simple wooden stand, allowing it to be displayed upright as a decorative object.
