FT306 - Izu Papier-Mâché Kappa Mask 伊豆張子
This delightful vintage mask is a traditional Izu Hariko (伊豆張子) papier-mâché folk craft depicting a Kappa, one of Japan’s most beloved mythical creatures. Handcrafted in the Izu region using layered tezuki washi (handmade Japanese paper), the mask embodies the warmth, humor, and expressive simplicity characteristic of regional mingei art.
The Kappa is rendered with a rounded, friendly face, wide smiling mouth, and distinctive green coloring, crowned with its iconic dish (sara) on the head—an essential feature of Kappa folklore. Hand-painted details in green, white, red, and gold bring the character to life, while the visible paper texture, gentle creases, and slight irregularities highlight its handmade nature and vintage charm.
In Japanese folklore, the Kappa is a water spirit associated with rivers and lakes. While mischievous, it is also believed to protect waterways and bring good fortune when treated with respect. As a folk mask, it was traditionally displayed as an auspicious decoration, serving both as a talisman and a playful guardian of the household.
The mask comes with its original presentation box bearing the seal of Izu Menshibō (伊豆面紙房), along with an original printed leaflet explaining the history of Izu folk crafts and the traditional papier-mâché techniques using local materials.
