FT302 - Shigaraki-yaki Tanuki Figurine Set 夫婦和合

FT302 - Shigaraki-yaki Tanuki Figurine Set 夫婦和合

This delightful ceramic tanuki (狸) pair is crafted in the traditional Shigaraki-yaki (信楽焼). These two charming raccoon dogs stand side-by-side, each carrying a pole that joins them together in a humorous and symbolic pose.

Shigaraki ware (信楽焼) — one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns, originating from Shiga Prefecture. Crafted in the traditional rustic style, this figure captures the beloved tanuki, or Japanese raccoon dog, a folkloric creature celebrated for its mischievous charm, shapeshifting abilities, and association with good fortune and prosperity.

Embodying the ideal of 夫婦和合 (fūfu wagō)—marital harmony—this set represents a couple working in sync, supporting one another through life’s journey. The male tanuki is humorously tasked with carrying a weighty symbolic burden, while the female follows with a lighter load. Together, they express balance, affection, and the sometimes playful reality of partnership.

Each tanuki holds a sake flask inscribed with the kanji are virtues essential to a peaceful relationship. Their rounded, friendly features and warm glaze enhance their inviting charm, making them ideal for display in a home entrance, living space, or as a wedding or anniversary gift.

This pair of tanuki figurines has been damaged but has been repaired.
