FT297 - Hariko Akabeko – Red Cow Paper Mache 赤べこ
This vintage Akabeko (赤べこ) is a traditional papier-mâché folk toy from the Aizu region of Fukushima Prefecture. Crafted in a stylized form of a red cow, this piece exudes rustic charm with its aged red lacquer, playful expression, and expressive white facial detailing.
Uniquely, this Akabeko wears a brocade cloth saddle adorned with gold and green patterns, symbolizing prosperity and cultural refinement. Atop its back are three miniature money box, tied with rope, imbuing the piece with auspicious meaning.
In Japanese folklore, the Akabeko is a symbol of resilience, protection, and good health. Originating from a local legend involving a red cow that tirelessly helped build Enzō-ji Temple in Yanaizu, the Akabeko later became associated with warding off illness, especially smallpox, due to its red color—a hue believed to have talismanic power.
With visible patina and wear that reflect its age and history, this Akabeko is a beautiful representation of Japan’s enduring folk traditions and makes a wonderful decorative or collectible item.
