This is a charming Hariko Akabeko (赤べこ), a traditional Japanese papier-mâché figurine originating from the Aizu region of Fukushima Prefecture. Measuring approximately 12 cm in length, this red cow is decorated in a festive manner, complete with a miniature lucky mallet (打ち出の小槌 / uchide no kozuchi) on its back — a symbol of prosperity and wish fulfillment in Japanese folklore.
The Akabeko is instantly recognizable by its vivid red body, wide eyes, and bobbing head, which gently nods when touched. Historically, the Akabeko was believed to ward off illness, especially smallpox, and was cherished as a talisman of good health and protection.
This particular Akabeko is beautifully adorned with braided cords, bells, and a straw saddle, enhancing its auspicious character.
