FT286 - Japan Folk Toy Daruma Crafts 白河だるま

This is a large traditional Japanese Daruma doll (達磨) from 1984, instantly recognizable by its bold red color, stylized facial features, and rounded, weighted base. This particular Daruma is vibrant in design, with gold accents and expressive brushwork, and includes handwritten inscriptions on the underside — often marking it as a gift or commemorative item.

Daruma dolls are modeled after Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen Buddhism, and are considered powerful symbols of perseverance, resilience, and good fortune in Japan. The most iconic feature of the Daruma is its blank eyes: when purchased, both eyes are usually white. The owner paints in one eye when making a wish or setting a goal, and only fills in the second eye once that wish or goal is fulfilled — symbolizing commitment and determination.

The handwritten message on the base adds a personal touch, a well-wish, which is a common custom when Darumas are given as gifts.
