This delightful piece is a Kaga Ningyō (加賀人形) set featuring the legendary figure Kintarō (金太郎) — a beloved character in Japanese folklore known for his superhuman strength and brave heart.

The two charming dolls are crafted in the traditional Kaga doll-making style, a regional folk craft from Kanazawa in Ishikawa Prefecture. Made from white-painted clay and dressed in rich miniature fabrics, the expressive figures showcase exquisite hand-painted details. One figure represents young Kintarō wielding a traditional naginata (pole weapon), while the other plays the role of a cheerful companion holding a shishimai (lion dance) mask, suggesting a festive or celebratory scene.

Kaga Ningyō are known for their round, soft childlike faces and their symbolism of happiness, vitality, and protection. These dolls are often gifted during seasonal festivals such as Tango no Sekku (Children’s Day) to wish children strength and good fortune.

Housed in its original wooden tomobako (box) marked with the characters 加賀人形 (Kaga Ningyō) and 光陽作 (made by Kōyō), this is a beautiful example of a regional Japanese doll that blends charm, folklore, and cultural artistry. A perfect piece for collectors of Japanese folk dolls and traditional arts.
