This is a vintage set of Miharu-goma (三春駒), traditional wooden toy horses originating from Miharu Town in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. Known for their bold, stylized design and vivid colors, these folk craft horses are a beloved symbol of good fortune, vitality, and protection.

Each horse in this graduated set is carefully hand-carved from wood and painted in striking red, black, gold, and white, featuring signature patterns like circular crests (representing harnesses or family crests) and flames or wings on the body. The upright posture and thick brush tail made from horsehair or fiber give them a spirited, energetic appearance. The smallest horse retains all the intricate detail of the larger ones, emphasizing the craftsmanship behind this set.

Miharu-goma have a long-standing tradition as talismans for children’s healthy growth and were once used as ritual offerings. They are also linked to Miharu’s connection with horses, both real and spiritual, and are often sold during festivals or at temples and shrines.

This full set, showing five sizes in descending order, beautifully captures the enduring appeal of Tōhoku-region folk art. A wonderful collectible for lovers of Japanese handicrafts, or a meaningful gift symbolizing strength and perseverance.
