This exceptional Bizen-yaki (備前焼) rabbit figurine is a beautifully crafted piece by renowned Bizen potter Norimatsu Shunko (乗松俊行), a respected ceramic artist born in 1923 (Taishō 12) and active throughout the Shōwa period. Known for his mastery of traditional kiln firing and natural clay expression, Shunko’s works embody the quiet strength and earthy elegance that define true Bizen ware.

Sculpted in a lifelike reclining pose, this rabbit displays a soft, natural texture achieved through Bizen-yaki’s signature oxygen-reduction firing, a technique requiring no glaze, allowing the raw qualities of the clay to appear beautifully on the surface. The warm brown tones, subtle gradations, and kiln markings highlight the organic character of Okayama’s high-iron Bizen clay.

The rabbit’s expression is gentle yet alert, with finely modeled ears, paws, and facial details. It is a piece that radiates calmness and auspicious energy. In Japanese symbolism, the rabbit represents good fortune, progress, and safe journeys, making this an ideal display piece for both collectors and interior spaces.

Includes the original wooden tomobako (signed storage box) with the inscription “備前 兎” (Bizen • Rabbit), artist’s paper (栞) detailing the history of Bizen-yaki and the biography of Norimatsu Shunko, the protective orange cloth (fukusa)
