FT276 - Omiyage Crafts of Hida Sarubobo さるぼぼ

This is a sarubobo (さるぼぼ) folk craft doll from Hida-Takayama in Gifu Prefecture, Japan. The name “sarubobo” literally means “monkey baby,” and these charming faceless dolls have a long history as regional amulets believed to bring good fortune, protection, and safe childbirth.

This particular sarubobo is dressed in a festive black and navy vest and the middle emblazoned with the kanji 飛騨 (Hida). A small bell and a little bag are also attached, enhancing its protective qualities. The red color of the sarubobo is the most traditional version and is thought to ward off evil spirits and disease.

On the tag, written of sarubobo originates from the Hida region, where grandmothers or mothers handmade these dolls from leftover cloth to give to children as protective charms. Over time, sarubobo became a widely cherished folk item and a symbol of love, family, and well-being.

Today, sarubobo dolls are popular as souvenirs and are often used as good luck charms for family happiness, safe childbirth, matchmaking, and travel protection.
