FT266 - Yamahoko folk crafts of Gion Matsuri 祇園祭
A vintage ceramic miniature of a yamahoko (山鉾), an ornate festival float featured in Kyoto’s renowned Gion Matsuri (祇園祭). Celebrated every July, the Gion Festival is one of Japan’s most famous and historic festivals, with origins tracing back to the 9th century. Its grand processions of elaborately decorated floats are registered as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.
This particular miniature represents one of the hoko (鉾) floats, known for their towering spires and ornate roofs. Crafted in glazed ceramic, the float is detailed with rich red, black, and gold accents and features symbolic motifs of lanterns and sacred ropes. The wheels and boxy shape reflect the traditional structure of these floats, which are pulled through Kyoto’s streets during the parade.
These miniature yamahoko figures are often sold as souvenirs or talismans, celebrating Kyoto’s rich cultural legacy and the craftsmanship of Gion Matsuri. A charming collector’s piece or seasonal decoration, it embodies the spirit and pageantry of Kyoto’s summer tradition.
