FT264 - Great Buddha of Nara 奈良大仏像
This miniature folk craft sculpture is a representation of the Great Buddha of Nara (奈良大仏像, Nara Daibutsuzō), a cultural and spiritual icon of Japan. The figure, cast in a dark metallic finish with subtle bronze highlights, depicts the seated form of the Buddha in a meditative pose atop a lotus pedestal, with a radiating nimbus (光背, kōhai) symbolizing enlightenment emanating from behind his head.
The design pays homage to the Daibutsu enshrined in Tōdai-ji Temple (東大寺) in Nara, one of Japan’s most historically significant temples. This colossal bronze statue of Vairocana Buddha (Birushana Nyorai, 毘盧遮那仏) was completed in the 8th century and remains one of the largest bronze Buddha statues in the world. It is a powerful symbol of protection, compassion, and cosmic wisdom.
This particular sculpture, though small in scale, is carefully crafted to evoke the solemnity and grandeur of the original. The fine details in the robes, mudra hand gestures, and the flame-patterned mandorla convey reverence and deep spiritual intent.
