FT261 - Handcrafted Doll Izumeko Ningyō いづめこ人形
This handcrafted doll is an example of an Izumeko Ningyō (いづめこ人形) — a traditional Japanese folk doll rooted in the Tōhoku region's rural customs, particularly from Yamagata and Miyagi Prefectures. The name "Izumeko" (also spelled Idzume-ko) comes from the regional practice of “idume”, the act of swaddling a baby tightly and placing them in a woven cradle basket, allowing mothers to work in the fields while keeping the baby close and safe.
This particular doll features a sweet childlike face with fine painted features and natural fiber hair, dressed in a vibrant red kimono adorned with traditional patterns. The body is made of fabric and secured in a padded seat that rests inside a handwoven straw basket — faithfully replicating the original cradling method. Tied at the front is a silk ribbon, adding softness and elegance to the presentation, while a pair of decorative temari balls lies playfully at the doll’s side, symbolizing childhood joy.
Izumeko dolls are more than decorative items — they are cultural symbols of maternal love, protection, and care. Often given as gifts to newborns or as good luck charms, they reflect the warm traditions and ingenuity of rural Japanese life. A heartwarming addition to any collection of folk dolls, this piece captures both the artistry and affection of Japan’s nostalgic past.
